SMS-Activate Shut Down: Where to Go in 2026

By ComparaSMS editorial team · Updated October 2026 · What changed

SMS-Activate was the best-known virtual number service for years. In August 2025 it stopped serving Russia, and on December 29, 2025 it announced a full shutdown. Its website, apps and Telegram bot no longer issue numbers.

What former users should do

• Don't top up on look-alike domains — clones appear after every big shutdown.
• Move scripts to a service with an SMS verification API.
• For accounts registered on SMS-Activate numbers, turn on 2FA now — guide.

Where to go

Our top pick is Tiger SMS: 260+ countries, pay only for received SMS, instant refunds and an API. HeroSMS keeps a similar interface. Full list: SMS-Activate alternatives.

What to look for in a replacement

• Refunds — the money must return when no SMS arrives.
• API — similar methods make it easy to move scripts.
• Volume — enough numbers for the countries you use.
• Payment methods that work for you.

Moving your scripts

Most activation APIs use the same steps: get a number, poll for status, set status (finish or cancel). Check method names and statuses in the new service's docs, and test on a small balance first.
