Why Am I Not Receiving Verification Codes?
9 Causes and Fixes
A missing code is the most common problem with virtual numbers. Nine times out of ten, cancelling and taking a number from another country fixes it. Here are all the causes, in order.
Check these first
- Did you enter the number correctly — with the country code, without an extra 0 or spaces?
- Did the app send the code inside the app or to an existing session? Telegram does this.
- Did the app choose a voice call instead of SMS? See code sent by call.
Why verification codes don't arrive
- The number was already used on this app. The app won't send a code, or says the number is taken. → fix
- The app detected VoIP. Use another country or a non-VoIP number.
- The country is restricted. Apps sometimes stop sending SMS to certain countries. → pick another country
- Too many attempts from your IP or device. Wait 15–30 minutes instead of switching numbers every few seconds.
- Location mismatch. Some apps compare the number's country with your IP. A VPN in the number's country can help.
- Carrier delay. Cancel and take a number from another carrier.
- You requested the code too early. Get the number first, then press "Send code" in the app.
- It's a public free number. The code may have arrived and been used by someone else. → why free numbers fail
- On your own phone: blocked short codes, a full inbox, or a spam filter — check message filtering in your phone settings.

Is it the number or the app?
A quick way to tell: request a code for the same app on a number from a different country. If the new number gets the code within a minute or two, the first number was the problem — it was already used or flagged. If neither number gets anything, the app is limiting you: too many attempts from your device or IP, or a location mismatch.
How long to wait before cancelling
Most codes arrive within one to two minutes. Waiting the full activation window rarely helps: if nothing has come after three or four minutes, cancel and try again with another country. Repeated "Resend code" taps on the same number can trigger a temporary block in the app.
Prevent it next time
- Pick countries with a good success rate for your app — check the stats in your provider's catalog.
- Use a non-VoIP number for banks, dating apps and US marketplaces.
- Keep one device and one IP per new account.
- If the app checks location, use a VPN in the number's country.
