Telegram Code Not Coming: In-App Codes, Locks and Privacy
Telegram passes free numbers more often than most apps, so when its code doesn’t arrive, the reason is usually one of the three below.
By the editorial team · Updated · 5 min read · What changed- No SMS usually means the code went to another Telegram session.
- Pick a number that got a Telegram code in the last 24 hours.
- Set a two-step password and hide your number right after sign-in.
Telegram accepts free numbers more often than most apps, so when its verification code doesn’t come, one of three things is usually happening: the code went to another Telegram session, Telegram paused codes after repeated requests, or it isn’t sending to that country. This guide covers each one, then shows how to sign up step by step and lock the account so nobody else can use the same number to log in.
For: People signing up for Telegram with a temporary number.
Covers: In-app codes, locks, countries, sign-up steps and privacy settings.
Not covered: Recovering an old Telegram account you lost access to.
1. Telegram Sent the Code to the App, Not by SMS
If the number is already logged in to Telegram somewhere, Telegram sends the login code inside the app instead of by SMS. On a public number that session belongs to someone else, so you won’t see it. Pick a fresh number for Telegram instead. If the confirmation screen offers “Send code via SMS”, tap it once and wait.
2. Telegram Says “Too Many Attempts”
This message means Telegram has paused codes for your number or device after repeated requests. More requests only extend the pause, so stop and wait before you try again with one fresh number.
Telegram pauses codes after repeated requests. Stop, wait and come back with one fresh number. How long to wait.
3. Telegram Doesn’t Send to That Country
Sometimes Telegram delivers codes to some countries better than others. If two fresh numbers from one country stay silent, the route is the likely problem, not the number, so a backup country is the fastest fix.
Telegram works with most countries. This week its codes arrived most often on UK numbers. If two numbers from one country fail, switch to a backup country.
How to Get the Telegram Verification Code on a Free Number
Pick a number that received a Telegram code in the last 24 hours, choose the country in Telegram, paste the rest of the number and watch the inbox. Telegram codes need a free sign-up to view because those numbers are in high demand.
- 01Pick a fresh number from the Telegram filter: these received a Telegram code in the last 24 hours.
- 02In Telegram, choose the country, paste the rest of the number and confirm.
- 03Watch the inbox. If the screen says the code was sent to another device, go back and pick a different number.
- 04Enter the code, then set a two-step password before you do anything else.
Hide Your Number and Lock the Telegram Account
Set a two-step password right away and hide your number from other users, so nobody who reuses the public number can get into your account. In Privacy settings, set “Phone number” to Nobody. Telegram on How to use · the full security checklist.
Telegram Verification Code FAQ
Can I use Telegram without a phone number?+
Telegram needs a number to register. You can hide it from other users afterwards, and you can choose a username so people find you without seeing the number. After sign-up you can also set a two-step password, so the number alone is never enough to log in to your account.
Can people see my number on Telegram?+
Only if your privacy settings allow it. Set “Phone number” to Nobody, and people will see your username instead. Open Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Phone Number. You can also stop people finding you by your number there. Do this right after you sign in with a temporary number.
What happens if someone else uses the same number later?+
They can request a login code to that number. A two-step password stops them: without it, the code alone isn’t enough to log in. Telegram asks for that password after the code, so set it before you close the tab and store it somewhere safe.
Why does Telegram say the code was sent to the app?+
The number already has an active Telegram session somewhere. On a public number that session isn’t yours, so use a fresh number. If the screen offers “Send code via SMS”, tap it once and wait two minutes; if nothing arrives, switch numbers.
Can Telegram ban an account made with a free number?+
Telegram can limit any account that breaks its rules or looks automated. A free number doesn’t cause that on its own, but a number tied to many accounts can draw extra checks. Avoid creating many accounts from one device in a short time.
